The machine shop supervisor is responsible for managing day-to-day activities within the machine shop. This includes coordinating machining operations, supervising machinists and technicians, ensuring the maintenance and optimal performance of machinery, and meeting production schedules while maintaining high-quality standards. This position requires strong technical expertise in machining, leadership skills, and a commitment to continuous improvement in both processes and team capabilities. Supervision of Machining Operations Oversee the setup, operation, and maintenance of all machine tools and equipment, including CNC machines, lathes, milling, Drilling & tapping machines, and grinders. Ensure that machining operations are performed efficiently and meet production schedules. Monitor workflow, prioritize work orders, and adjust schedules as necessary to optimize resource utilization and meet deadlines. Team Leadership and Development Supervise and support a team of machinists, operators, and technicians, providing training and guidance on technical procedures and best practices. Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and promote a positive work environment. Identify skill gaps and arrange for training to enhance team capabilities and promote cross-training to increase workforce flexibility. Quality Assurance and Process Control Ensure adherence to quality standards and monitor the quality of machined parts through inspections and measurements. Work closely with the quality department to address non-conformance issues and implement corrective actions. Drive continuous improvement initiatives, such as Six Sigma or Kaizen, to improve quality, reduce scrap, and minimize rework. Machine Maintenance and Troubleshooting Coordinate regular preventive maintenance of machines and equipment to minimize downtime and maintain optimal performance. Troubleshoot equipment issues and collaborate with maintenance teams to resolve breakdowns promptly. Ensure all equipment is calibrated and in proper working condition, and that any necessary repairs are completed efficiently. Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance Maintain a safe working environment by enforcing all safety protocols, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring team members adhere to safety procedures. Implement and monitor workplace safety programs and participate in incident investigations. Ensure compliance with OSHA and other regulatory requirements related to machine shop safety. Inventory and Resource Management Manage inventory levels of raw materials, cutting tools, fixtures, and other supplies necessary for machine shop operations. Coordinate with purchasing and supply chain departments to ensure timely availability of materials and tooling. Optimize resource allocation to reduce waste and improve efficiency, maintaining accurate records of inventory usage and shop supplies. Production Reporting and Data Analysis Collect and analyze production data, including machine utilization, cycle times, and downtime, to identify trends and areas for improvement. Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on machine shop performance metrics and present findings to management. Utilize data-driven insights to make informed decisions on process adjustments, tool usage, and maintenance scheduling. Continuous Improvement and Process Optimization Implement Lean manufacturing principles, such as 5S, to maintain an organized and efficient machine shop. Lead projects focused on process optimization, cost reduction, and cycle time improvements.Collaborate with other departments (engineering, quality, and production planning) to optimize machine shop processes and meet production goals.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or technical certification in Machining, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field preferred. Experience: 5+ years of experience in a machine shop environment, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role. Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting CNC and manual machines; experience with machining processes, tools, and equipment; familiarity with CAD/CAM software will be an advantage.
