The role of the Mechanical Design Engineer is to take ownership in the development of mechanical design of WIKA Optical Sensing products, ensuring that developed solutions are fit for purpose in their given environment through appropriate ownership of requirements capture and validation. Mechanical design will include the selection of suitable materials and definition of part geometry for mechanical, thermal, vibration and pressure loads. Produce design documentation and data using computer aided tools (CAD and FEA) to demonstrate mechanical design features. Take ownership and responsibility of relevant engineering changes in the existing design & control records, verification & implementation of a change. The Mechanical Design Engineer may also take responsibility to design and develop necessary equipment and tooling to support manufacture and test of WIKA Optical Sensing product, utilising mechanical engineering expertise in electro-mechanics, pneumatics, and thermodynamics. Ensure that the Design Requirement Specification (DRS) contains relevant information to produce adequate product design in line with Design for Manufacture (DfM) practices for reproducible design solutions. Develop mechanical design solutions in accordance with Design Requirements Specification using SolidWorks and other computer aided design tools. Prepare engineering drawings for design, manufacture and inspection of development and production solutions in accordance with BS 8888, ISO GD&T and other relevant national, international or client standards Work with process engineering team to produce relevant supporting manufacturing documentation (Work Instructions, Travellers, etc.) Manage Engineering Change Request (ECR) process, ensuring robust configuration change control and substantiation including regular Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA). Use Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and other computer tools to support design feature analysis and verification.
Mechanical Design Engineer with a background from manufacturing / production / industrial engineering. Degree or equivalent in a mechanical engineering discipline or similar engineering topic. Experience in Design for Manufacture with the ability to interpret technical drawings and write high quality technical reports. Background and experience in solving mechanical engineering challenges through design, calculation, and test. Experience using design software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, for example) Ability to conduct finite element analysis for static and dynamic analysis for pressure, temperature, and vibrational loads, ideally SolidWorks FEA tools. Strong technical and practical understanding of manufacturing processes, such as welding, brazing, bonding, polishing and etching, working with laser light sources (preferable)
